Our coursed is based on everyday occurrences in buildings and structures. The course will provide you with detailed knowledge on asbestos and its hazards. This course is intended for the attendees to gain further knowledge and experience in all aspects of asbestos abatement including: asbestos management, removal techniques and procedures, health effects and exposure, government regulations and guidelines, personal protection and material product identification.

Course Outline:

  • History of Asbestos and Its Uses (Introduction to asbestos, the asbestos family, types of asbestos, common uses of asbestos, industrial and commercial properties, asbestos containing products and consumer products).
  • Health Effects Associated with Asbestos Exposure (Introduction, Asbestos and Smoking, Asbestos Points of Entry, the Respiratory Pathway, Asbestosis, Lung Cancer, Mesothelioma)
  • Asbestos The Hazard: Inspection, Assessing and Management (Plant and facility inspection requirements, asbestos regulations and guidelines, asbestos building assessments, reviewing building records, assessing the physical appearance of asbestos, bulk sample collection and analysis, assessing the hazards, role of air monitoring, sampling surface dusts)
  • Response Action (Asbestos removal, asbestos encapsulation, asbestos enclosure, operation and maintenance programs)
  • Monitoring of Asbestos Bulk and Air Samples (Bulk and air sampling, bulk sampling non friable materials, bulk sampling friable materials and sample collection)
  • Airborne Fibre Monitoring Sample strategy, ambient air sampling, sampling during removal operations, final clearance sampling, phase contrast microscopy identification, scanning electron microscopy identification and fibrous aerosol monitoring (FAM)
  • Personal Protection (Introduction, Training Programs, Safe Working Practices, Air Purifying Respirators, Air Line Respirators, Self Contained Breathing Apparatus, Protection Factor (PF), Quantitative Fit Testing, Qualitative Fit Tests, Respirator Program Respirator check list, respirator cleaning and disinfection, protective clothing, fit testing and saccharan testing)
  • Work Site Decontamination Procedures Entering an asbestos work area, existing an asbestos work area)
  • Asbestos Regulations (Understanding the components of the regulations and how it affects daily job functions, understand Type I, Type II and Type III classifications.
  • Practical demonstrations of Type II enclosure set up and glove bag procedures.

Upon completion of course each attendee will receive a certificate of completion.

Please Note: Cancellation notices must be received five days prior to event date. Registration fees will be refunded less a $50 enrollment charge. Alternately, you are able to send someone else as a replacement attendee.
